    • Participated in a Workshop on “French Minorities in Ontario” at the School of Experiential Education, Etobicoke, Ontario. April 11, 1978. Showed the York student film The Invisible French and led discussion of same. Noteworthy are the current allusions in the newspapers, radio and television, to the phenomenon of “Invisible French.” The title “The Invisible French,” first coined for the York film has also been taken as the title of an analysis of Toronto’s French, recently published by sociologist Thomas R. Maxwell, Wilfrid Laurier University. A Harbourfront project is also entitled «Francophones invisibles».

    • 1986 Submitted three proposals for an M.A. in French Studies entitled: Language and Society.         • Wrote a report on the use made of the Federal Government’s French-Canadian language programme La parlure, which I secured for use in DLS French 242, and subsequently in AS/FR 2100.06. Recommended that it be made available for more general use (May 1976). Visited Staff Development Branch, Public Service Commission of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, and the language centre at L’Asticou, Hull, Québec in order to discuss the use of French language-training programmes, «Le français tel qu’on le parle», «Table ronde», and «L’atelier» at York University, August 1976. These programmes have now been made available for public distribution and purchase through the Canadian Government Publishing Centre, Ottawa.
        • At the request of Professor Donald Gauthier, Chair, Student Affairs Committee, and in collaboration with Professor Zilpha Ellis, prepared a recruitment brochure entitled “French Studies at York.” A concerted attempt to make the originality of our programme better known throughout Ontario secondary schools. Several meetings and drafts of that document in November-December 1978. Cited by Herb Sigman as a model for imitation. In sightly revised form, this brochure continued to serve until 1983 as a means of making the Department of French Studies better known to secondary school students.
        • Informal discussion with Claude Lacombe, Ministry of Colleges and Universities leading to the addition to our Department of a French language teaching assistant from Quebec. Such an assistant has been named to our department every year since 1978, and works primarily in AS/FR 2100: Introduction to Canadian French Language and Linguistics. The Second Language Monitors Programme is funded by the Federal Government, and costs York University nothing. I have frequently participated in meetings and workshops for the purpose of selection and orientation of our assistants. All meetings organized by Roy Schatz, Director, Special Projects Branch, Ministry of Education, Queen’s Park. Attended Annual Retreats of the Faculty of Education, at Glendon College (May 1978, 1979, 1981).
        • Assembled readings and devised an assignment for Education I students planning to enrol in the FSL option in January, 1979. Evaluated 15 such assignments in spring 1979, and again in spring 1981.
        • In collaboration with the Department of Instructional Aid Resources, arranged for reception of a Satellite Teleconference on Language Laboratory Technologies. Attendees from Glendon College, York University, and University of Toronto (April 1988).

        • Arranged for the distinguished Romance Philologist, Yakov Malkiel, University of California, Berkeley, to include Toronto on his retirement lecture and research tour of North America and Europe: “The First Cycle of Romance Philology in North America.” (March 18, 1981).
        • 1992 Arranged a research visit to York University, University of Toronto and OISE, by Professor Maryse Privat, Universidad de la Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canarias, España. Correspondence with this colleague, who was seeking documentation and bibliography on Canadian and Quebec French, for students specializing in «Les français hors de France» at her institution (November 18-20, 1992).

IX Service to the Broader Community

        • Translated a brochure for the Blood Donor Service of the Canadian Red Cross Society (1976).
        • Participated in the «Journée du carnaval» at Saint Jane Frances Separate School, and contributed prizes from the Faculty of Education, January 29, 1978. Advised Rabbi Jakobowitz, of the Board of Jewish Education, in securing candidates for a replacement FSL teaching position (February 1981).
        • Attended Dialogue Day, a workshop and school visit organized by the Scarborough Board of Education, at the request of Gwenda Echard, Chair of DFS (March 1981).
        • Attended Ministry of Education workshop on implementation of new curriculum guidelines entitled French: Core Programmes 1980 (October 1980).
        • Invited by Lois Walshe, Head of Moderns, Milton District High School, to talk to 50 OAC students on the “Pronunciation of Vernacular Quebec French” (December 1990).
        • Audience participant in a TVOntario production entitled: Pédagogie 2000: «L’avenir du français dans la communauté européenne». A conference given by Prof. Normand Labrie, Associate Director, Centre de recherches en éducation franco-ontarienne, OISE (March 1993).
        • Attended the annual Concours d’art oratoire for outstanding Ontario French Immersion students at OISE (April 1993).
        • Declared winner in “The Mystery of the King City Bakery” (Dec. 1993). Researched the history of a 19th c. King City residence and store renovated by J. D. Strachan Construction, in view of its possible designaion as a heritage property (September and December 1993). The structure dates from 1853, its first use being that of General Store and Post Office (Harvey J. Davis, Postmaster). From 1885-1940, it served as a residence and Veterinary Hospital and, as a Bible Society Depository from 1916-1940. From 1948-1988 it was a Bakery, and from 1994 to the present a Bookstore and Financial Consultant’s Office. Research led to examination of King Township and York Region railways: Ontario, Simcoe and Huron (inaugural run to Aurora in 1853), Schomberg and Aurora (1902-1927), and the Metropolitan Radial Railway (1885-1930).
        • Researched the history of Moses Douglas (1810-1876) and Isabella Stevenson (1805-1877), Scottish immigrants to Beauharnois County, Québec in 1825, and their six generations of descendants, some of them being represented as predecessors of Noel Corbett.
